[Commonplace book], [ca. 1830].

Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of about 35 primarily religious prose and verse meditations upon the subjects of affliction, suffering, and death. Prose entries include Abstracts of Admonitions on Subjects for Meditation to Have Recourse to According to Circumstances; Consolatory Texts of Scripture; and Meditation on Death. Verse entries include "On a Butterfly, which hovered into View from some unknown retreat on the 16th March 1830 and remained fluttering in the window while the funeral of a dear friend was passing by," "Verses Supposed to be written by Alexander Selkirk during his Solitary Abode in the Island of Juan Fernandez" by William Cowper, "Death" by Beilby Porteus, and, with slight emendations, the poem "The Old Man's Comforts, And How He Gained Them" by Robert Southey.

Porteus, Beilby, 1731-1809

Beilby Porteus was born in York in 1731; his parents were Virginian colonists who had moved back to England. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1752 and tutored until 1757 when he was ordained. In 1759 he won the Seatonian Prize for his poem 'Death: a poetical essay'. By 1762 Porteus had been appointed domestic chaplain to Thomas Secker, Archbishop of Canterbury; in 1769 he became Chaplain to King George III, and was created Bishop of Chester in 1776.
